A Holistic & Integrated Approach to Healthcare
Functional Medicine is the medicine of WHY? It looks at how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease for each individual rather than often just masking symptoms with medication.
The Functional Medicine model is an individualised, holistic, science-based approach that empowers patients and doctors to work together to address the underlying causes of their health issues and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalised treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.
Treating the Cause
Having worked in traditional general practice for over 15 years Dr Sheikh became increasingly aware that modern medicine is not always equipped to deal with the burden of chronic diseases and that there are alternate ways of treating chronic issues such as fatigue, irritable bowels, obesity, anxiety, joint pain and skin conditions such as eczema.
She has studied at the renowned Institute for Functional Medicine and has completed their flagship course- Applying Functional Medicine to Clinical Practice and all six of the Advanced Practice Modules on gut health, hormonal health, cardio-metabolic health, detoxification, Immune health and energy metabolism in the body which give her the breadth of knowledge and understanding to help you change your life in a positive way. She has worked with individuals to reverse diabetes, treat IBS and come off acid blocking drugs like omeprazole and navigate troublesome menopausal symptoms.
By balancing the four pillars of health (nutrition, sleep, movement and relaxation) to create health and wellbeing, Dr Sheikh can work with you to resolve your chronic health issues through lifestyle changes.
A Personalised Approach
The advantage of the functional medicine approach is that it gives you time with the clinician to build a timeline from birth to present day to really understand the context of the drivers of inflammation for you and thus your symptoms today. And rather than just suppressing the symptoms with medication the emphasis is to go upstream and look at the root of why the symptoms have come up. Thus the body can be shifted gently back into balance.
Our genes have not been able to adapt to the rapid change in modern lifestyle such as artificial light, sedentary work settings and access to unlimited food which disrupts natural circadian rhythms; a new construct is needed to look at body systems as a whole.
Lifestyle medicine uses an evidence based approach to allow you to hack your biology to mitigate against the impact of the rapidly changing modern day environment and improve overall functioning and performance.
Symptoms we can help with include:
- Digestive issues / irritable bowels
- Autoimmune issues
- Hormonal issues
- Joint pain
- Mood / anxiety disorders
- Weight management
How It Works
You will be asked to complete a detailed pre-consultation questionnaire in advance of your appointment which will allow Dr Sheikh to thoroughly review your history and health goals and thus use your appointment time effectively and drill down on the salient points.
If needed functional testing can be organised at this point to help reveal further underlying issues causing symptoms and dysfunction and looking to bringing balance to the body.
You will receive a full report from Dr Sheikh on her findings and recommendations for your health goals with a lifestyle prescription focusing on the four pillars of health- nutrition, movement, sleep and relaxation. In addition she can make recommendations on support with nutraceutical supplementation and other therapies.
A follow up appointment allows you to go through the testing and check on progress with the lifestyle prescription.
